UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — 研究ers at the Penn State Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS), together with collaborators at other institutions within 宾西法尼亚, have been awarded approximately $1.1 million in funding under the U.S.

“当代科学研究产生了惊人的数据量,这些数据必须在合作者之间快速安全地传输,然后进行分析, stored and shared,” said Jenni Evans, director of ICDS, professor of meteorology and atmospheric science, and principal investigator on the project.

Funded by the National Science Foundation, .” In computer networks, DMZ, or demilitarized zone,

“As part of 宾西法尼亚’s only land-grant university, founded with a mission of teaching, 研究, 为英联邦的人民和工业提供服务和支持, ICDS建立了一个战略目标,即创建一个允许广泛访问高级计算和复杂数据的环境,埃文斯说.

KINBER, a nonprofit organization committed to working with communities, 政府, businesses and schools to advance digital equity and inclusion, was awarded in 2022, 埃文斯说. Other project collaborators include faculty from Swarthmore College, Lafayette College,

“KINBER及其新子公司KeystoneREN很高兴能在这个重要的网络基础设施项目上合作,” said co-principal investigator (co-PI) Nathan Flood, president and chief executive officer of KINBER.

According to Wayne Figurelle, ICDS assistant director and co-PI,

除了, since the project has a goal for long-term sustainability, 这个项目将使未来科学和教育的进一步发展成为可能,” Figurelle said.

在这个阶段, PA科学DMZ将由KeystoneREN提供的骨干网组成, networking equipment and performance tools at each participating campus, and specific science applications for each partner institution. According to Evans, 该项目将减少这些学校合作和参与当代数据驱动的科学实践的障碍, leading to changes in their approach to campus information technology, science 研究 and educational programs.

, new avenues of inquiry and synergistic contributions,” said co-PI Jason Simms, manager of 研究 computing at Swarthmore College. “这个项目将开始在英联邦各机构之间创造数字公平的过程, especially for those that are under-resourced.”

PA科学非军事区将作为各种资源不足机构的实现模型, including community 大学, 大学, universities and both public and private K-12 schools throughout the state, according to the 研究ers.

“建立一个全州范围的研究网络和随之而来的基础设施无疑会产生未知的更广泛的影响,因为它会推动随后的课程创新, spurs additional investment in hardware and software, and enables skill development for students, faculty and cyberinfrastructure professionals at participating institutions,埃文斯说.

弗雷德里克·阿德金斯,数学与计算机科学系教员 Indiana University of 宾西法尼亚 and IUP STEAMSHOP Director, is also a co-PI on this project.
